Sketchbook Challenge - Part 4: Limited Color

Sketchbook Challenge - Part 4: Limited Color

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!

This week, I'm continuing my sketchbook challenge, and I hope you're joining in!
The goal is simple: draw one subject and approach it differently each time.

In today’s video, I’m focusing on my still life subject and experimenting with a limited color palette using watercolors and a pencil.

The Limited Palette

Limiting your color palette can help you to keep things simple and focused. It allows you to just concentrate on the shapes, the composition, and also the values, instead of getting overwhelmed by too many color choices.
A limited palette can create a certain harmony in your drawings, make them feel cohesive. It also speeds up your process, and you have to be sort of creative because of the constraints.
Using two colors can be really powerful.
-You can use complementary colors by choosing two colors opposite on the color wheel, like blue and orange. This creates contrast and visual interest.
-You can also pick two colors next to each other on the color wheel, like a blue and a green, or a red and an orange. It will be more harmonious and a little bit more subtle.

Your assignment this week

I encourage you to play with this in your sketchbook this week, and you will discover what works for you and what doesn't.

I share my process and my own discoveries in this video today.

Materials I used:

  • Stilman & Birn Beta Series sketchbook

  • Faber-Castell Pit oil pencil, extra soft

  • Watercolors (Daniel Smith)

  • Pentel Aquash waterbrush
