Sketchbook Challenge - Part 5: Continuous Line

Sketchbook Challenge - Part 5: Continuous Line

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday

In today's video, I’m diving into one of my favorite drawing techniques: the continuous line, also known as the oneliner. This technique is all about keeping things loose and playful. It helps to let go of worries about the outcome, and instead to just enjoy the process.

What is the Continuous Line Technique?

In case you’re new to this method, here’s the basic rule: once your pen touches the paper, you 're not allowed to lift it off. That means your line keeps going, even if you need to retrace your steps to get from one area of the drawing to another. It’s a bit tricky but also freeing, because it forces you to trust your eyes, to not get caught up in the details and to simplify what you’re seeing.

In the video, I draw a still life subject that I’ve been working with for a few weeks now. I'm challenging myself -and you - to draw the same subject over and over, using different tools and approaches each time.

This week, I'm using a rollerball pen, and instead of my go-to watercolors, I added pops of (limited) color and texture with colored pencils.

Why I love this technique

What I really enjoy about the continuous line is how it slows you down and speeds you up at the same time. While you have to be careful and deliberate with your linework, you also can’t overthink it. The line needs to keeps moving.

Plus, it’s a great reminder to embrace the wonkiness! There’s no such thing as a perfect oneliner! There's no such thing as perfection, period.

Are you joining me in this challenge?

I’d love for you to join me in this creative challenge!
Grab your sketchbook and a pen, and give the continuous line technique a try. Remember, your sketchbook is your creative playground, so don’t take it too seriously.
Just have fun with it!

Materials I used:

  • Stillman & Birn Beta Series sketchbook

  • Uniball Eye Rollerball - Broad

  • Caran d'Ache Luminance Colored Pencils

Remember, it’s not about what you draw, but why you draw. Because drawing makes you happy!

I hope this inspires you to pick up your pen and draw!
