Let's play with a Brush Pen

Let's play with a Brush Pen

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!

I love using brushpens.

It takes a bit of practicing to draw with a brushpen, so today, let's play with brush, ink and water.
I am not talking about brush markers, which are also great. I am talking about pens that are filled with ink like a fountain pen, but instead of a nib, they have a brush.
So today's exercise is also very suitable for using a brush and ink, if you don't have a brushpen.
If you're new to it, first fill a page with marks and squiggles, to get a bit familiar with the feeling of the soft brush on the paper. You get a thicker line when applying pressure, and a thinner line with less pressure. You can hold it closer or further away from the tip, and just like when painting with a brush, you'll notice a difference in effect.

For using a brushpen, which works more fluid than a pen, you need to learn to let go of control at least a little, because the line isn't always predictable, and the brush will detect shakiness or hesitancy. Which is all great, and adds a lot of interest and character to your line.

As you know, everything is interesting when you draw it, so once again today I will grab my keys as my subject. It'll be great to show you how to not get too much into details, and to make use of the watersoluble ink too. Using a brushpen is just like using a good brush and a bottle of ink to dip it in. If you don't own a brushpen, no worries, just use a brush and ink.

And ... if you like my mantra "everything is interesting when you draw it", then you'll probably like my upcoming book too: "Life is better when you draw it." You can sign up to stay in the loop about the progress of the book: https://www.koosjekoene.com/book
