How To Use Negative Spaces In Your Drawings
Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Today, set up a little still life on your table. Let's draw! But we are not drawing all the elements that we see in this still life. Instead, focus on the spaces around the still life. It helps to have a contrasting background, so you can focus on the background only, and spot bits of the negative spaces better.
This will slow you down, but it also makes it easier to take decisions during the process, because you are actually ignoring all the details. They can't overwhelm you, because you are simply drawing the shapes around the subject.
Have fun finding all those good chunks of negative space. It's great to see your drawing grow and start to make sense! And after that, you can add color. By quickly slapping down your watercolors (and paint outside the lines a bit), you're adding a lot of life and energy to the page.
