Drawing Yourself
Don’t be misled by the drawing at the top of this post. I LOVE drawing selfies.
When doing self portraits, they always turn out differently. Never really quite like me, but something about me. I feel like the drawings I make of myself are more like reflections of my mind and mood in ink, as opposed to reflections I see in the mirror (or photos for reference.)
A different face every time
Every time you draw your own face, it will turn out differently on the paper. That's because you look different each day. You feel different each time. You will see yourself differently.
You are not just looking at your reflection, but as you draw it, you can do a bit of self reflecting. It's great to take this moment to yourself, for yourself and about yourself - and to treat yourself to a moment of doing what you love: drawing.
You always have your model available, all you need is a reflective surface. And the pressure to draw likeness, or even get a bit of a flattering image on the paper isn't as high as when you would draw someone else. By doing self portraits regularly, you get more familiar with the features and proportions of the human face, and with that it becomes a little less daunting to draw other people.
Here’s one of my Draw Tip Tuesday videos on YouTube, which is about drawing selfies. Maybe it inspires you to try drawing a selfie today
And here’s a random selection of selfies from my archives:
