This week, in the new Sketchbook Skool kourse “Watercolor Rules! And how to break them”, Ian Fennelly reveals all his watercolor secrets. Spoiler alert: he uses a LOT more than just watercolors. But his watercolor washes are key for his style.
The results of his 2-3 hour painting sessions are mind blowing and it’s been a mystery to me how he creates his amazingly colorful and vivid cityscapes. Now, he’s breaking it down and makes us understand how important it is to calm your colors down, to have patience and confidence, how important details can be, and what you can accomplish with just two favorite colors.
It was an absolute treat to visit Ian in his studio in Hoylake, near Liverpool, and to film with him in the streets of Liverpool, UK. To show you how much fun it was, here’s a behind-the-scenes video I made while I was there, filming Ian Fennelly.
You can still join us and dive into the world of watercolors.

Hi I'm Koosje. I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Amsterdam, where I was born and raised. I went to school to study graphic design, then worked for ten years as an award-winning professional photographer. But eventually my love of drawing and painting took over and I became an illustrator. My illustrations have been published in many Dutch magazines and in 2011, I began blogging and started developing and teaching online art classes. In 2014 I founded Sketchbook Skool, which is a flourishing community of artists from around the world of all skill levels. View all posts by Koosje Koene
