Draw Tip Tuesday – How to Paint Foliage and Trees

Posted by Koosje Koene in ArtJournal, Draw Tip, Draw Tip Tuesday, sketchbook on October 2, 2018

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!

I got a question about drawing and painting trees and foliage. Well, that’s something I struggle with often too. Should you get into detail and draw every single leaf, or is making a suggestion with just some brush strokes enough?

Of course, how you capture greens depends on what art tool you’re using. Much to explore there, I would say!

I’ll show you a few sketchbook pages to explain just how I approach drawing trees and foliage, and then I’ll do a few drawings to give you some ideas.

Hi I'm Koosje. I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Amsterdam, where I was born and raised. I went to school to study graphic design, then worked for ten years as an award-winning professional photographer. But eventually my love of drawing and painting took over and I became an illustrator. My illustrations have been published in many Dutch magazines and in 2011, I began blogging and started developing and teaching online art classes. In 2014 I founded Sketchbook Skool, which is a flourishing community of artists from around the world of all skill levels.
