What To Draw At Home

Posted by Koosje Koene in ArtJournal, sketchbook on January 18, 2018

Winter time

I don’t know about you, but to me the winter months seem to last forever. Not in the way summer can seem to last forever… it’s a little less positive: the days are short and dark, and in the Netherlands often they are grey too. Luckily, there’s a positive side to it. I love indulging in staying inside. To cook, work on fun projects, watch movies and Netflix shows, sit under a warm blanket on the couch. And to draw! Even though the surroundings at home are more than familiar, there’s still interesting stuff to draw.

Here’s a few examples:

Our couch is sooo comfortable. Once you’re on it, you never want to leave. We have a lot of colorful pillows on it, and in the drawing below, I was inspired to draw a corner of the couch, because of the new pillow we bought, picked by my husband. It’s the one with the tucans on it:

Shoes are great for drawing practice: for perspective, shading, shapes, laces, zips:

My husband’s room will never, ever become a boring place. SO much to see and to draw:

There’s that comfortable couch again (a quick, sloppy drawing, so I could get back on it!):

Koosje Koene

Hi I'm Koosje. I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Amsterdam, where I was born and raised. I went to school to study graphic design, then worked for ten years as an award-winning professional photographer. But eventually my love of drawing and painting took over and I became an illustrator. My illustrations have been published in many Dutch magazines and in 2011, I began blogging and started developing and teaching online art classes. In 2014 I founded Sketchbook Skool, which is a flourishing community of artists from around the world of all skill levels.
