We’re a few weeks in with the watercolor kourse “Watercolor Rules! And how to break them” at Sketchbook Skool. It’s amazing to see how much progress students are making, and I am learning a ton too. So far I have learned that I don’t necessarily want to get into the nitty-gritty of technical aspects. While many people in klass are studying pigment codes and really get to know the exact characteristics of watercolor, I am enjoying the playful and intuitive approach that Augustwren showed us last week, and Inma Serrano is showing us this week. She combines many art materials with watercolors and plays with them like a kid does with toys.
I am so excited to see that every student gets something different out of the kourse and also, that we still have another two weeks to go after this!
And producing the kourse has been quite the learning curve as well. To show you how much fun it is to work so closely with an artist and a great film crew – here’s a behind-the-scenes video I made while I was in Seville, Spain, filming Inma Serrano. She’s the cutest, and she breaks all the watercolor rules we learned in the first two weeks of the kourse!
You can still join us and dive into the world of watercolors.

Hi I'm Koosje. I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Amsterdam, where I was born and raised. I went to school to study graphic design, then worked for ten years as an award-winning professional photographer. But eventually my love of drawing and painting took over and I became an illustrator. My illustrations have been published in many Dutch magazines and in 2011, I began blogging and started developing and teaching online art classes. In 2014 I founded Sketchbook Skool, which is a flourishing community of artists from around the world of all skill levels. View all posts by Koosje Koene
