My Faces Phase
I’m kind of obsessed drawing faces lately. Not sure where exactly the faces phase comes from. It may have something to do with the winter months maybe. I always love sitting warm and cosy in a café, studying faces while sipping cappuccino. It’s just a very uplifting thing to do, and kind of meditative. A caffeinated meditation, I guess you could call it.
But there’s this new thing I’m doing often; drawing from the TV in the comfort of my home, on the couch and maybe even under a blanket… it’s comforting and fun, and it is a great practice too. Plus, pausing the show I’m watching on Netflix every time I see a good angle or expression, makes me really savor the episodes!
It’s interesting how you can suddenly notice that some shows have great lighting for portraits, and other’s don’t.
I love trying different techniques, but I have to say that the combination of a Pentel black brushpen and a faber-castell grey brushpen really is my favorite to work with in my current small Stillman and Birn Sketchbook.
Oh yes, and cars too! That might become another obsession while watching ‘comedians in cars getting coffee’!
Hi I'm Koosje. I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Amsterdam, where I was born and raised. I went to school to study graphic design, then worked for ten years as an award-winning professional photographer. But eventually my love of drawing and painting took over and I became an illustrator. My illustrations have been published in many Dutch magazines and in 2011, I began blogging and started developing and teaching online art classes. In 2014 I founded Sketchbook Skool, which is a flourishing community of artists from around the world of all skill levels. View all posts by Koosje Koene
