Art with a capital A

Posted by Koosje Koene in Uncategorized on December 11, 2017

A few weekends ago I was on a city trip, and I stumbled upon this street filled with art galleries. Until recently I used to pass by these galleries because I felt like they were not for me. I wasn’t even sure if I was allowed to go in and look at the art inside. What would the gallery owner think about me snooping around without any intention to buy anything?

There’s a word for that kind of behaviour:

The imposter syndrome

You’re not an art connaisseur, let alone an art buyer, so you think that an art gallery is not for you. But why not? You enjoy art. You like looking at it. You’re interested how it was made. You’re pretty sure that in some way, a piece of art will provoke a feeling or emotion. You might hate it, you might love it, you might not understand it at all.
And because all of the above, you should totally go into that art gallery and enjoy the art in there!

I say this with confidence now, because on that recent city trip, I DID go into a few of those galleries and discovered how much fun it was. In one of the galleries, they just left me completely alone and that was fine. In another one, I chatted with the owner, and he talked about the artist who made a little sculpture I liked. He told me about the creative process as well as the sculpting technique and in those 5-10 minutes, I learned so much. A whole new world opened up to me. I stepped outside feeling inspired, refreshed and happy.

How did I change my mind about it?

Well, for Sketchbook Skool, we’ve been producing the new kourse called ‘How Art Can Make You Happy’. Artbook editor, writer, and artist Bridget Watson Payne teaches it, and she opens the door to the Art world – with a capital A.
Art has a reputation to be very serious and sometimes even boring. But it’s not! Art, and appreciating art is fun. This kourse helps you get it and see that it’s beautiful, exciting, and makes you happy even when you still don’t get it.
Here’s a 30-minute interview I did with Bridget about the kourse:

The kourse is only $29 and it launches today! So Here’s a link for you to sign up for the kourse.

Koosje Koene

Hi I'm Koosje. I'm an illustrator and art teacher in Amsterdam, where I was born and raised. I went to school to study graphic design, then worked for ten years as an award-winning professional photographer. But eventually my love of drawing and painting took over and I became an illustrator. My illustrations have been published in many Dutch magazines and in 2011, I began blogging and started developing and teaching online art classes. In 2014 I founded Sketchbook Skool, which is a flourishing community of artists from around the world of all skill levels.
